“General Observation on Quadrupeds”: Posters

This is poster for “General Observations on Quadrupeds”. If you think something needs to change or theres any suggestions anybody wants to make then please comment! I would love to hear all comments.

“General Observations on Quadrupeds”: Main Theme

“Breadwinner”: Edit update.

“Breadwinner” is coming along very well. I haven’t really been involved in the edit as much as maybe I should have, but from what I’ve seen, there indeed may be a masterpiece to come out of the mind of Kai Leech. It has altered quite a bit from the original script, for many reasons, too many to go into, but its certainly looking great.

The mood is pretty much still there, and the shot construction is good. I’m probably giving a biased opinion but, as an outside eye, which I have been regarding the edit, it’s looking pretty sick. Paul Daly has surpassed himself with the cinematography.

The poster should be completed next week, so it’ll be posted on here when it is finished.

“General Observations on Quadrupeds”: Edit update.

I wish I could update more often, like everyday, but I don’t really have much to report regarding the edit. Since the last update, the film has entered the final edit stage, which has involved the final tweaks to the narrative, dialogue and opening sequence and now the sound design and the grading are running parallel to each other.

The grading has been pretty straightforward thanks to Ste’s judgement on the shoot. The colour has been playing on my mind recently though. I have desaturated some scenes slightly to give them a more bleak feel, but I’m unsure wether this cheapens the image. The colour in the original footage looks amazing, and I don’t want to detract from Ste’s work. My main concern is to produce the best image I can, but having nobody to bounce ideas off, I cannot completely fulfil this role. I’m trusting my own judgement at the moment, and I feel that’s a bad thing. In all honesty, grading should be a two man game, one altering the image and the other discussing it in full. I don’t have a director at the moment either which doesn’t help. Poor planning I think.

The poster is on its way too. I’ve taken a simple, reductive approach to it. Encompassing the edit techniques and the new feel that the film has taken. There are two versions in development at the moment, both of which I’m happy with. When they are finalised I will post them on here.

Alone… alone in the edit suite, its a grim place to be. The community spirit isn’t here anymore as lots of people are editing at home due to university service being a little bit lacks. Three weeks is a long time to do something like this, mostly on your own. But the comments are good about the film. Its kind of good to hear.

Ciao for now.

“Quadrupeds”: That’s a wrap!

After such a long time, “General Observations on Quadrupeds” has finally wrapped. We wrapped at 2:35pm on the 10th April. Filming went well for the most part, although it was not without it’s hiccups. Some Time was wasted, and some aspects were not thought out enough, but we ended both phases of the shoot on a high. The only damage that was made was to the budget, which wad hit pretty hard, needing another couple of hundred to finish things off in time.

From what I’ve seen, the footage looks pretty great and we will have a good film when it’s all edited. I wanted to thank all who was involved with the shoots, and those who passed by the shop and asked questions about it. Hitchin’s hospitality was very good and we were very well received. Baldock travelodge will always have a place in my heart, but please please sort out the mattresses. Too soft!

“Breadwinner”: We’re underway!

Kai Leech’s masterpiece, “Breadwinner” began filming last weekend with amazing results. I’m very pleased with how it went and the results we have seen in the edit suite over the past two days. It’s amazing to see something you have only seen on paper come alive before your eyes. Credit goes out to Mr Paul Daly for applying his amazing camera skills to a heartwarming script.

Theres one more weekend, consisting of kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and supermarket scenes. All should go well. For more images, see www.clivepeach.co.uk.

“Breadwinner”: two weeks and counting…

“Breadwinner” has reached its final stages of pre-production and we are about to begin readying the locations for filming. I haven’t updated in a while as I’ve been ill and I have not really been able to update anything as decisions have still be up in the air. “Breadwinner” has since been re-drafted to include much more story enhancements and emotional content between the father and his sons, additions that will serve it well in my opinion. I have not been able to secure our final actor as yet though, due to him being elusive and slightly obscure, but this week I aim to complete this challenge.

My house has been selected as the main location for the film, with scenes taking place in my spare room, living room, kitchen and bathroom. Rachel Hall has been brought onboard to do the production design, which we are finalising this week. I am hopeful that we will start to prep the locations this week. The positives of shooting in my house is that we can basically have free-reign over the location, as I will allow us to alter the decor as much as we can to suit the film and I will be able to manage the location on a full-time basis.

Hopefully there should be some more updates this week, but as it stands next week we have two weeks until we begin shooting, and I am confident we will do well with the time we have given to shoot.

“General Observations on Quadrupeds”: Script, done!

I write to announce in completion, in part, of the script of “General Observations On Quadrupeds”. After over 6 months of intense character development and improvisations, we have created, written and developed the script. This stage of the process was not without it’s problems though. We began the ‘writing’ process by improvising the meeting of our two primary characters and the subsequent visits to the butcher’s shop. This played out very well and drama came naturally. The process lead us to a fairly unexpected, yet controlled outcome.

The script started at 17 pages, with scenes still not improvised, then it swelled to over 25 pages; far too long for a 10-minute short so we, brutally, cut it down to the 13-pages it is now. With the process being fairly organic, the director took us down the route of editing the script down with our actors, a decision I whole-heartedly disagreed with. I felt that them changing the dialogue outside of the context of an improvisation was wrong. It was as if all of the work we had done was a waste of time. I transcribed the dialogue from recordings of the improvisations and it lead to a more natural and more rounded script. To change the text was wrong in my opinion.

Since the script was finalised a week ago, a storyboard has been drawn up which both myself and Stephen Roe, the cinematographer, is happy with. I was really proud of Rosie for doing such a good job of drawing up the first load of story boards. It was exciting to see her vision for the first time, although myself and Ste did make some changes to suit ourselves, and the amount of thought she had taken over each shot was very, very good. I shall post some of them up once they are scanned in and digitised.

We progress to further development of the scenes with our actors, as I finalise the plans for the Hitchin shoot next month. We are in exciting times, exciting times indeed!
